Sorry we had to push back again. We are all too busy and my main help Marcus Rietema President-International Gravity Sports Association (IGSA) has a new baby coming and the downhill events are filling up in 2 hours with 170 riders. The interest and sport is growing which is a good thing but we can't do it all so this has to wait. Working on this new Official Guide for 2012

Working on it, the dates we are planning are the first week before or after US National Championships, San Dimas, California USA, October 8-9, 2011. The weekend dates October 15 & 16 most likely it will be a one day event on Sunday the 16 th. The pavement is not great but so many people have asked about it and I've wanted to revive it for decades. Will keep you posted. Permit process first with Capitola. I am working on it with Marcus Rietema president and founder of the IGSA. He's got the no how I have the drive.

The Capitola Classic was a skateboarding event that received international attention and brought lots of excitement and energy to the Capitola village back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The Capitola Classic was well known in skating circles for its annual downhill race, which was a head-to-head speed competition that drew top names in the sport, many local as well as international, including Santa Cruz, California local John Hutson, who held the world speed record for skateboarding at 53.45 mph and dominated the event each year.

I was going to give up and posted on twitter that I was done. But got re-inspired to keep trying a bit longer for an October 2009 event. Even if it is smaller than what we originally hoped for. I'll keep you posted. Thanks folks for hanging in their.

Marcus and I walked the course and checked out the pavement, run out, start, finish, road closure and nearest beer drinking establishment that would love to have skaters play pool and hang out. We found the Bay Bar & Grill 209 Espanade Street. Matt the owner was super nice. The place is going to be perfect for an autograph signing or awards hangout.

We will keep you posted as we go through the permit process.

Should of posted this a week ago!

I'm planning on going and finding out if folks really want to do this event. I keep getting folks asking. It would be great to have Jimbo poster design and a good crowd of skaters to take over Monterey Avenue with respect and bring in some tourist dollars.
Join us for a Capitola Call to Service brainstorming meeting!

Bring your ideas about how we can build a caring community by connecting people who need help with volunteers.

Come and help us figure out how to reach out – neighbor to neighbor. Many of us could use some help. ALL of us can give some help.

We will be developing an online service that can make it easy for people to get involved with and connected to their community and that can serve as a model for other communities.

The pavement on Monterey is pretty alligatored and rough. Word is the road will not get paved for 4 years. Can't hold a race on it and it would be way better to have a skate contest on something smoother. I'll keep you posted.

Baby Steps

Last nights meeting went well at the Capitola Village meeting. I got full support from the committee, which is the first step in this process. I wasn’t even going to go any further then this if I didn’t get the support I’d hoped. I got more then I could even imagine. Thanks everyone. They understand what a major race is verses a minor race. They even suggested doing a two-day event but instead we figured doing a full day would be a good start. I have to get a permit and it has to go by the City Council. I hope to show that Capitola is a skateboard friendly community and that the youth of today is welcome with open arms. This first year I hope to do a slalom race open to all ages and a kid’s race in the morning. I’ll keep you posted on a date. So far it looks like early spring 2008.

When Linda called with interest about the Capitola Classic. I imagined a little black and white story that would get sandwiched between a bunch of ad's never to be found. I never imagined this old photo would be making the cover decades after the race. I still have that board. I bought it from a good friend named Miko at this little store that was at the bottom of the race hill, called Wings, Waves and Wheels in Capitola. Miko and I still skate when we can between being parents and working full time. Lately I've been running cones with Mike "Smiley" Goldman who still carves it up. His son Jamie is a professional mountain bike rider who rides for Giro. We laugh and skate thinking who'd of thought we still be enjoying it at our age.

Capitola Classic Once Welcomed Skaters to the City's Streets

I spoke at last months Capitola city council meeting about why the kids need a skatepark and how I spent most of my youth driving to San Jose just to skate. Linda Fridy a writer for the Mid County post was in the audience and got a hold of me. She wrote another article about trying to get a skatepark in Capitola and is super supportive and nice.

Richard Novak founder of Santa Cruz Skateboards, Independent trucks and Santa Cruz Mountain Bikes recaps the past event and supports my efforts to make the Capitola Classic a reality again. He was one of my first skateboard sponsors from when I was 16 years old and has always been a strong supporter of my art and skateboarding career for decades.

I promise we won't do a repeat. This is an old newspaper clipping I found in my skate stuff. I wonder if anyone remembers this?

After this happened the city of Capitola asked Richard Novak to run the event. He and Jay Sherman took it on and made it so popular that it the event had to be stopped due to the fact it was getting to big for the size of the town at that time. It brought people from all over out to watch and take in the beauty of the little beach town.

Will it be a downhill race? Slalom race? Street skate? Decade’s later people still talk about this race. I am going to try and revive it. There are slalom and downhill races going on throughout the US and Worldwide. When they had skate events in the streets of Capitola it was a great community gathering for both young and old. The Capitola Classic event received international attention and people that were there still talk about it over 25 years later. It brought lots of excitement and energy to the village and of course revenue. My first slalom race on this hill was 1975 I was 15. I’d like to help more young skaters to have a memorable experience like that at least once in their life.
